Eastern Europe in the Spring! – Brasov, Romania – 2024 (part 2)

We really enjoyed Brasov, Romania. I think we were there 3 nights, staying at a really nice hotel. The hotel was a few minutes walk to the City Square where there was lots to do and see. Our first full day there, our guide took us to the first Romanian School. The school is located on the grounds of St Nicholas, a church built in the 14th century. The school was believed to have started in 1583 and was the only one in Transylvania with students from all over the region. Some villages paid for one student to attend school so they could return to their village and teach others. The school closed in 1941 and has been a museum since 1964. Interesting fact: the oldest Romanian bible is in this museum, it was printed on goats skin.

There is a church called the Black Church, just beside the town square so we headed there next. This church has been here for 600 years and they were doing some work on it when we were there.

We also did a bit of a trip to see two Fortified Churches, Prejmer which was started in 1218 and also Harman Fortified Evangelical Church from 1240. Fortified Churches were designed to function as places of worship and also defensive strongholds. Prejmer was big enough to offer shelter to 1,600 villagers/people if they needed to be safe from attack. These 2 fortified churches are so similar, it’s hard to decipher which photos go with which church!

We really enjoyed this city and when we were done with our full day of touring around, we walked to the town square (by ourselves) to find something eat and possibly drink (ie beer) We stopped at this little brewery for a visit, Mustata Brewery and then on to Am Rosenanger for dinner. The meal was great and we were able to eat outside, it was really nice out. After that, we found this cute little local’s bar and sat for a bit. It was hidden down a maze of a street and I’m pretty sure there was no sign on the door.

Well still more to see in Romania, see you soon!
