We are still in Chiang Mai and today we went for a bike ride for a few hours and then off to the White Palace (pictured above)
Clint and I do a lot of bike riding and it’s always fun to bike around other countries. We had kind of old fashioned, regular pedal bikes and it was a fun time. We stopped at a place and bought some sticky rice; the rice was placed inside bamboo pieces for holding/eating without the use of plates or bowls. We stopped at a rice paddy and we stopped at a house made entirely of teak. This property also had these baskets all around the property and there was a rooster in each basket as they were big into cock fighting. Not my thing but it’s their culture right? Towards the end they took us to a spot where they sold deep fried bananas, not a fan of bananas so I cannot tell you if they were good or not! We also stopped at a little outdoor restaurant and they gave us bowls of soup. I have no idea what kind of soup or what was in it, but it was really good.

After our bike ride, we packed up our stuff and took a 5 hour bus ride to Chiang Khong, still in Thailand. ON the way we stopped at the White Palace, or White Temple but the official name is Wat Rong Khun. The white exterior is supposed to reflect purity and also to reflect the teachings of Buddha. A couple of buildings further in the park were gold in colour. Beautiful archictecture.
We stopped regularly for bathroom breaks and to stretch our legs and we stopped at some unique spots. I don’t even know really what to make of this sign at one of the gas stations. Never a dull moment, not even at a service station.

Our hotel in Chiang Mai was down a little alley and seemed like a sketchy neighbourhood and was like a motor court hotel. I think it was called the Namkhon Resort and Guesthouse. The room was very tiny with a cement floor and big screen windows that you could not close. The bathroom was interesting, we had a lot of interesting bathrooms on this trip! The shower was literally in front of the toilet so yes the whole room got wet when you had a shower. lol

Later that evening, a bunch of us headed out to walk down to a local bar. We had a great time and there was another G Adventure group but they were all younger than our group. G Adventures has a travel group for 18-30 year olds and that was one of those groups. They have some great trips on their website but we’re too old lol . Myself and 2 others did Karaoke with the young people, it was a lot of fun.
Tomorrow we pack up and head to Laos.
