South East Asia – Back to Bangkok, Thailand ! – 2024 – Part 29

Last Post on our South East Asia trip !

So our tour has ended and we find ourselves back in Bangkok, where we started from and at the same hotel. We stayed in Bangkok another few days on our own as we weren’t ready to go home yet. One of our fellow Canadians, Michael, was also staying a few days longer so the first day that we were on our own, he came with Clint and I while we went exploring. We took the subway to another part of the city, it’s a big city, 11.2 million people and that is one quarter of the population of Canada.

We headed to Jim Thompson’s house which was beautiful, the gardens and colours of the house and inside the house were just stunning. I could live in this house. Who is Jim Thompson you may ask? I didn’t know either but now I do. He moved into that house in 1959 and started a silk industry. In 1984 he went on a trip and was never heard from again. No one knows what happened to him but his business is still going strong. Above photo is in one of his gardens.

We also went to a Market and did a lot of walking and had some great food. Here a couple of random photos to finish off this very long trip!

Market

We were gone 5 weeks and it was very difficult to not put a lot of photos and information into the many, many………..many blog posts that I did. Hopefully one or two of you enjoyed taking this trip with us! Now the long flight home, about 18 hours I think.

We were only home about 4-5 weeks and then we headed to Eastern Europe in middle of May. We went to Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Turkey and finished off in the city of Amsterdam. Stay tuned and thanks for reading.

Stay safe.

  1. I did enjoy the whole series and liked how you did it in installments as you did. I did not know who Jim Thompson was, so I learned something – interesting his business thrives without him. What were you having for your meal in the first picture after the Jim Thompson reference … what is on either side of the noodles?

      1. I was trying to figure if it was an exotic fruit of some type or seafood. That’s funny, but sometimes it’s better you don’t know what you’re eating.

I may have told you this story before, so apologies in advance, but my aunt’s husband was Maltese and he loved to cook. They lived in a flat upstairs with my grandmother. My mom and I were visiting and I had spent the day at the Royal Winter Fair. It was a cold day and I walked into my grandmother’s house and he had made a stew and said “here, have some stew to warm up.” It was good, nice and spicy, but then he said it was made with octopus and I felt sick. I moved my spoon around in the bowl and could see the suckers on the pieces of octopus. Everyone could have warned me as I’m sure my mother, who hated fish, would not have eaten it.

  2. 11.2 million people – that is a lot of people! Driving in Phoenix traffic today was enough for me. Your photos are stunning! The reds are brilliant, aren’t they. Five weeks is a fair amount of time. Looking forward to following your next adventure. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

  3. So many beautiful bright colors. What a great way to end your tour, time on your own. I would have loved that market and trying different foods. Check out my post tomorrow.
