Eastern Canada, Here we Come – Goose Bay, Labrador -2025-Part 3

We made it to Happy Valley Goose Bay, population approximately 7,500.

We were able to get a campsite at Gosling Lake Campground which has been open for about 2 years or so. I can’t remember what we paid but it was reasonable. I mentioned a few times about the weather being cold, well not now. For about 3 days it was in the 30’s Celsius, very hot and when we set up at our campsite we were told the Hydro (electricity) was out and it didn’t come back on until later that night. No AC, no fans so we went for a drive and then ended up at their beach on Gosling Lake. We stayed for 2 nights here, drove around the area and did some back roads and spent 2 afternoons at the beach. The beach was okay but you had to walk out about 50 metres or more before the water came past your knees.

So that’s that, not much else to say! Except………….there is a military base here, which is significantly smaller than it used to be, 5 Wing CFB Goose Bay. We took a drive around the Base to see what it looked like but it looked all the other Bases I have seen and lived on. I grew up on military bases so the housing is pretty well all the same all over Canada.

Some photos of the drive from Churchill Falls to Goose Bay, just to show the landscape and to show what Labrador looks like. Some photos are of our back roads travels and the town of Goose Bay itself.

After two nights here, we head to Port Hope Simpson………

  1. The flowers look like Lupines, lovely. Peace Rock? Cool! How did the car get hung up like that… Glass, weed and drugs, an interesting combo. The scenery is beautiful up there, and the military housing looks good too. Something I don’t understand about French is why the language seems to be spelt and maybe spoken backwards unlike English. Great post!

  2. I like the idea of such a small town – that would appeal to me. Wouldn’t it figure that you’d reserve the place, then find out there is no hydro. Goose Bay and Gosling Lake – did they have other goose-related places in this town? That was quite a likeness of a caribou on the garage door – too bad you didn’t get to see the entire “real deal” too. The pesky bugs made you miss Peace Rock – that’s too bad too. Was the SUV driver trying to jump over the pile of rocks on the road?
