We spent a few hours at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Museum. Hiroshima was hit by a nuclear bomb from an American bomber, on 6 August 1945, towards the end of WWII. The bombing killed an estimated 140,000 people in Hiroshima, and a further 74,000 in Nagasaki. For years after, survivors would face forms of cancer or other side effects from the radiation. We also walked to the spot where the hypo centre was, they had a plaque stating this was the location where a U.S. Army bomber dropped the bomb and it went off, 600 metres above this spot.

Some more photos below. The one of the “A Bomb Dome”, last two photos in the group below, was actually the former Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall which was used to promote Industry. It was one of the few buildings left standing when the bomb went off and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Safe found in a pharmacy, he and his wife and two employees were killed. Everything in the safe was carbonized

Exposed to the atomic radiation at close range, this is thought to be “shadow” of someone waiting on the steps for the bank to open.

We spent quite a bit of time here, the displays were well done, considerate and informative. It was a bad time in history and we shouldn’t forget these events.
Until next time..
