Algonquin Park, Autumn 2023, Part 1

Anyone who knows me knows that I have to have my Algonquin “fix” regularly, particularly in the Autumn.

We didn’t get to Algonquin Park for our camping trip until 13 October as we were in Spain and Portugal for a few weeks. But better late than never ! The leaves were mostly gone and it was cooler but I mean it was still Algonquin and I love that place so I’ll take what I can get.

I’m going a little backwards as we went to the Park in October and Africa in July and I still haven’t posted those photos yet but they are coming…………(so many photos lol )

We did see two moose, on separate days, one cow and one Bull. Sadly they would not turn around completely even though I stood watching them for a very long time. When we spotted the Bull moose, of course I was shooting into the sun but still, it was a moose!

The landscape looks different this time of year. The photos below were taken on Opeongo Road, one of our favourites. One day as we drove down the road, I spotted something walking across the road so we went a little faster to see what it could be. Just as we approached I saw it was a porcupine but he was already heading into the bushes. All I was able to get was a blurry back end shot of him/her but in all the years I have been coming here, I have never seen a porcupine in this park so it was still exciting.

Next up! Arowhon Road and area photos. Stay safe !

  1. Wow – that first moose head was awesome Susan. That stubborn cow could not be bribed or cajoled to pose – that’s too bad. I like the other pic of the bull as well. I’ve never seen a porcupine in the wild so I’ll have to enjoy it by seeing your photo. I can remember reading the book “The Incredible Journey” many years ago and the porcupine waved its tail and quills galore were thrust into the face of one of the dogs and it was painful as they were on the run so no one to remove them. I did a double-take thinking that was an awfully big tortoise. 🙂 I’m glad you’re back to posting again with all these wonderful photos – keep on sorting through your trips.

  2. Susan, in a separate comment I’m going to send you a fun moose photo and caption I saw today on Twitter. I see you are on Twitter, but will send it to you here and just delete it when you’ve seen it.

      1. I thought it would give you and Clint a smile. 🙂 I use Twitter, have not migrated to Threads yet though. I did see you were on Twitter awhile ago. I’m on Instagram but not on it enough to feel comfortable with the platform. A fellow blogger from the UK started walking, then running and photographing along the way and decided to do that on Instagram more than her WP blog and asked me to follow her there.

      2. Hi Susan – Threads was created after Elon Musk started changing Twitter and people didn’t like it and he wanted to charge to be a verified user with a blue checkmark. It was just created this Summer. It is on the Meta platform, but the thing about Threads is that it is connected to Instagram somehow, so if you join Threads but don’t like it, if you delete your Threads account, it also deletes your Instagram account. I tried to join a while ago, but wanted to do it using my computer and that was not available, but I understand it is now. I don’t use Instagram that much, but I don’t like what’s happening at Twitter – it’s getting “garbagy” to be honest.

      3. Yes “garbagy” is a good word and that’s why I don’t use Twitter anymore and I’m certainly not paying for it ! I think I will just stay with Instagram and FB. There are so many social media platforms now, I can’t keep up.

      4. People are so rude and I’ll be reading a serious news story and you can see the comments which are just vile or so off-the-wall. I stay on there for news and weather and I check trending topics, but that’s it. I thought I’d mention the issue with deleting Threads and your Instagram is gone as that might be a game changer to joining. Social media/e-mail, not to mention blogging … my eyes run together by this time of the evening, especially on week nights when I’m online even longer.
