Tanzania – The Serengeti – Part 2

We saw so many lions, an unbelievable amount. We saw 2 lionesses with 5 cubs so many different times. Lion couples and young male lions together. They seemed to be everywhere ! We were even witnesses to 2 lionesses hunting Tommies for their lunch and a lion couple mating. Here are some photos…

As I mentioned, we were watching the 2 lionesses and 5 cubs and then all of a sudden, there were Thomson Gazelles flying past and one lioness went one way after them and the other went the other way. It happened so incredibly fast that we got very few photos and no video at all, it was so unexpected !

That’s it for Lion Country, next post a few miscellaneous pics of the Serengeti.

See you soon.

  1. Those cubs are so cute playing with one another and that one with the funny face made me smile. Those cubs were big! Glad he didn’t nab the gazelle in front of you – it might have been very gory. I’m surprised the cubs would have blood on their faces. I’ve never had a cat, but I know they are so fastidious about keeping their fur clean – maybe that is something they learn later in life? I thought Mom would take care of that (like my mom would spit on her finger if I had a milk moustache when I was a little kid – ewww.) How exciting seeing all the lions here – just what a safari should be!

      1. They were so playful that you forget for a minute that they have big teeth and claws. Yes, the dreaded spit for a milk mustache – seems like forever ago for that. 🙂 I worked at an ad agency in the Creative Department and one of our clients was Lincoln-Mercury. So, for promo shots of landing the account, the animal handlers brought the “big cats” from California to our Detroit office. We had Tom-Tom the Cougar (remember how he sat on top of the Lincoln-Mercury sign and growled – hopefully they had that ad in Canada) and I don’t remember the other cat’s names, but we had the Bobcat and Lynx for those particular small Mercury cars. It was really a fun afternoon. The main handler for Tom-Tom was a woman. There was a man as well and each of the other cats had their own handler.

      2. I wasn’t sure if the ad would have aired in Canada or not. The tagline at the end for all Lincoln-Mercury ads was the cougar would sit on the Lincoln-Mercury dealer sign and growl. We did have some fun times at the ad agency Creative Department. We did Chrysler-Plymouth before that L-M account and my boss wrote and produced the ads for Cordoba and Newport and flew to California to shoot those ads with Ricardo Montalban (“smooth Corinthian leather seats” in the Cordoba) and Hal Linden (the Newport). They were both in hit TV shows at that time: Ricardo Montalban on “Fantasy Island” and Hal Linden in “Barney Miller”.

      3. Yes, it was at the height of their careers. Also, I forgot to mention “Mean Mary Jean” for the Chrysler ads when our agency did Chrysler-Plymouth. She was Judy Strangis who played “Helen” a teacher in “Room 222” at the same time. Yes, it was a fun place and I hoped to work my way up the ladder but that didn’t happen and most of my bosses (I had nine at one time) left for other jobs. Ad people are really transient, especially when things don’t go their way. They are a bit temperamental too. When we got the Lincoln-Mercury account (after losing Chrysler-Plymouth), Ford wanted control of more production and wanted it done in Michigan using different production houses. My boss and others in the Creative Department felt they lost “creative control” over their ads and left. We had 150 people at Young & Rubicam-Detroit at one time and it dwindled down to 75 after the writers and art directors left.

  2. Incredible photos! What an experience! That is an adorable face and those teeth! Must have been something to not only see these scenes but to hear them, as well. Thank you for sharing more of your adventure.
