Algonquin Park – Fall 2024 – Part 1 (Let’s take a little break from Spain and Portugal)

I am going to put a halt on my Posts about Spain and Portugal to share our recent trip to Algonquin Park with you. I like to post our trips in order, but I’m slow in doing this. I still have posts for Spain and Portugal, a trip we did October last year, and we have been to a few other places since. I will continue in the right order AFTER these posts.

Algonquin Park is my favourite place so I thought I would stick a couple of posts in here now and completely ruin my idea of doing my trips in order ! Then we shall return to Europe…..

We spent 5 terrific weeks in Algonquin Park in September/October this year. I could have stayed longer, the weather was beautiful and there is always so much to do. Some people think 5 weeks is a long time to camp, it is not. We did a lot of canoeing, hiking and exploring areas outside the park.

We were there four weeks before we saw any moose, which is the reason I go to Algonquin. This was highly unusual for Clint and I, there is normally an abundance of moose and other forms of wildlife. I feared the moose shown below was the only I would see. (This is at Bongopix Tavern in Whitney, just outside the Park)

Finally, a few days before we were to come home, we spotted one Bull crossing the highway, a cow in a field and then 3 or 4 days before we came home we were able to spend a couple of days with a handsome Bull and on another day, a cow.

If you haven’t seen a moose in person before, they are huge. The one in the photo below was a female and they are smaller than the males and you can kind of see the size of them compared to the car that’s parked there. On one site, it states that the average female weighs 771 lbs (350 kg) and the average male weighs 881 lbs (400 kg).

One day we were out and about and a guy told me where to go and what time to a particular spot to see wolves. The next morning we got up at 6 a.m. (yes o’dark thirty) and off we went to the spot and sure enough, there were a few wolves there. It was so foggy that morning and the wolf I photographed was quite far back in the bush. BUT I got an ok shot and it was exciting to watch them and hear them, from quite a distance I might add. I love the sound of them. We got up the next morning at 6 to see them again and then I had to have a nap that afternoon. I told my friend Jeannine I had a 4-5 hour nap and she laughed and said “That is not a nap!” lol. I think she’s right !

I will continue with a couple more posts on Algonquin Park and then back to Europe !

  1. I have never seen a moose in person Susan and in this post, you can really tell just how huge they are, especially the bull with that set of antlers. I am struck by how “leggy” the moose are, but then the wolf seems “leggy” too. The better to run I guess. How lucky you were to see these beautiful moose in the wild and not have to rely on seeing only the moose head on the wall.

    1. Yes they sure do have long legs don’t they? It’s amazing how quick they are for such a big animal and they can just step over guardrails like nothing to it. You should see me trying to get over a guardrail lol
