South East Asia – Vang Vieng, Laos – 2024 – Part 14

We left the village after our homestay this morning and headed to Vang Vieng, about a 30 minute drive. Our rooms at the next hotel weren’t ready so we left our luggage and headed out in a jitney to drive to the river to go kayaking. Not everyone went but we sure weren’t going to miss it. We only drove about another 30 minutes until we hit the river. We were given our kayaks and off we went! The river was full of rapids and rocks so it was a bit of work to manoeuvre through and around all of that.

I think we did about 8 or 9 kms, not too much. I could have kayaked the rest of the day to be honest, it was quite fun dodging the rocks. We went to a cave and did a walk through it, it was very interesting. Afterwards, they put on a BBQ and we chicken and vegetables on skewers and some other items. After lunch they took us tubing through a cave which was a bit anti climatic after the kayaking.

Our jitney then took us on a really bumpy road down to the Blue Lagoon, a tourist trap, don’t go. It was a huge disappointment, I thought it would be a nice sandy cove and beautiful waters but instead it was a rocky, pretty gross looking pool with slimy rocks and dirt and a ton of people. Not to mention some pretty loud Techno music blaring away. I love music and pretty much all kinds of music………except……..loud Techno music blaring away. lol I don’t even have any photos of this spot. We left earlier than we were supposed because we all wanted to leave.

Back to our hotel and after cleaning up, Clint and I headed out for a walk and went to a temple and then an Irish bar, then the Goat Restaurant for dinner and then we walked through a market before heading back to our hotel. It was a really great day.

Tomorrow is another day !

  1. The temples all seem elaborate! I was thinking you two would be pros as to the kayaking – I didn’t realize you only canoed on your local RV travels. I thought you kayaked too – because you do so many things! That’s great a fellow traveler got a picture of the two of you in your kayaks. That’s quite a day – rigorous yet fun. What a disappointment with the Blue Lagoon. You’d think by the name it would be some type of nirvana!
