Eastern Europe in the Spring! – Peles Castle, Romania – 2024

Photo above was taken in the Old Church, part of the Sinaia Monastery. The Monastery (with 2 churches) sits by a winding road heading to Peles Castle. The monastery and the Old Church were built in 1695 by Prince Mihai Cantacuzino. After a trip to Nazareth and Jerusalem, he was impressed by the image of Saint Catherine Monastery. He built the monastery as a dedication to the Virgin Mary. The monastery, churches and Peles Castle are located in the forests of the Carpathians, with the monastery being namd Sinaia for Mount Sinaia where Moses received the Ten Commandments.

The second church, or New Church (dating back to 1846)was used by King Carol as a summer residence until Peles Castle the inauguration of Peles Castle.

Next stop Peles Castle and we enjoyed a walk to get to the Castle through some woods. The Castle is quite large and was undergoing a lot of construction when we went there. The rooms were absolutely stunning. It was built between 1873-1917 and was summer residence to King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth. It became a museum in 1953.

After that, we walked back down to a restaurant for a meal, which was very good!

We headed back to Bucharest for one night before we got on our Emerald Cruise ship. When we got back to Bucharest, we put out luggage in our room and headed out. We decided to go tour the Opera House which we didn’t do when we were in Bucharest previously. Another stunning building.

That next morning we left Bucharest, we had a wonderful time here and I would recommend.

The next day we left for our 7 night river cruise !

  3. Wow, the church and castle are amazing with the architecture inside and out. That walk in the woods to the castle looked refreshing after the tour of the church. I really liked the knight and horse with all their shining armor … I think that was my favorite picture Susan. I am looking forward to seeing the pics from the cruise. I spent some time meandering around Clint’s pictures as well. Thanks for sharing it again. The “painted pictures” – forgive me for this maybe dumb question, but are they “painted digital images” or Clint is also a skilled painter?

    1. He uses a program to “paint” the pictures. I could do it but I like the natural look. They do look nice though. I like the knight too, how they were able to wear all that is beyond me!

      1. Time – we need more time to learn new things, but in the end, it was worth it for Clint. When I got the DSLR, I decided to learn how to use manual focus as I never learned on my 35mm camera (Canon AE-1) and always used automatic. So I spent a weekend in the Rebel T-6 for Dummies book and the camera manual and went out and came home with everything underexposed or overexposed, so it’s been manual ever since. One day I will learn. I say that, but ….
