Eastern Europe in the Spring! – Croatia – 2024

(Above is a photo of a building in Vukovar. Clint and I spent time walking around this city and I loved this building, I must have 25 photos of it)

On to Osijek, Croatia which is located in eastern Croatia, in the region of Slavonia. It’s the 4th largest city in the country with a population of approximately 96,000 people. Zagreb, Split and Rijeka are the other cities, Zagreb being the capital. The square we spent time in while in Osijek was lovely and there was a statue of Ante Starcevi, Father of our Homeland. He was a politician, publicist, and writer and was the founder and leader of the Croatian Party of Rights, advocating the independence of a Croatian state.

We also went to the Osijek Cathedral or the Church of St Peter and Paul.

We toured the Tvrda Fortress

We were fortunate that the tour we were on took us to a local family’s house for a traditional meal. It was a great meal and we watched the Mom working in the kitchen after which, we all ate together, family style. By that I mean, they just put bowls and plates of food on the table and we passed them around. It was very sweet and we really enjoyed their company and the food.

After our time in Serbia, we headed to Hungary, first stop Kalocsa.

See you soon !

    1. That was one of my favorite parts of the trip going to that family‘s house and meeting them and having a meal with them. And yes, I hope there’s no more war over there either. It really wasn’t that long ago was it?

  1. So much unique architecture here, that Cathedral inside and out – just magnificent! I like the old building in Vukovar and I can see why you took so many photos of it – so old, no windows and all the flowers spilling out of window boxes. Beautiful. How nice you had a family-style dinner at someone’s home … what a unique way to get to know culture of a foreign country. Were they able to communicate with you in English or it didn’t really matter – sometimes nodding your head or “mmm” on the delicious food works well.

    1. I loved that old building, we walked by it so many times. If I were rich and younger, I would buy it and I don’t know, do something with it lol. No they did not speak English but we had a guide with us who did. It was really great to do that, one of my favourite moments.

  2. There’s nothing like a traditional homemade meal when visiting a foreign land. Your photos are stunning, of a place that I’d love to visit and I can see why you have 25 photos of that first building. Charming perfection. 🌹Thank you for sharing.
