Eastern Canada, Here we Come – Labrador City, Labrador -2025-Part 1

We stayed at the Visitor Centre in Labrador City, they had about 9 sites at $65 per night, with full hook up. Gas here is about $.155 a litre and it stayed at about 19 Celsius while we were here. We drove around the area, going to Jean Lake, Fremont, Wabush and around Labrador City. We stopped at the one and only microbrewery in all of Labrador called Iron Rock brewery. We got talking to the young lady working there and found out she was from Ontario. I asked what part and she said oh just a small place you probably don’t know. Try me! She told us she was from Prince Edward County, about 1/2 hour drive from our house and that her Aunt and Uncle own a brewery there. The brewery is called Gillingham’s and we go there a lot and in fact, we had went there just before leaving on this trip. Small world. Here are some photos of Labradror City and area, we only stayed 2 nights.

  • Visitor Centre, we were camped to the left of the building and there was a museum inside the Visitor Centre
  • Our campsite
  • Not much is known about these now extinct ducks
  • Labrador ducks who became extinct in the 19th century

  • Their stores, banks etc are all in this kind of fabricated buildings
  • All the trucks have tall poles on them for visibility, snow markers, cell service

  • Coming up to what we think is a trailer park, trailers were parked all over the place
  • Out on our travels

  1. The town looks very small but nice too. It really is a small world isn’t it? I have met many Michiganders here. The pub looks inviting, and its sad that those ducks have become extinct. I wonder why? 😭

    1. Yes is sure does! I have another post coming up about another extinct species, due to hunting. When we were in Twillingate at a museum we found out about them. It’s so sad when we know, for the most part, people are the cause of endangered/extinct species.

      1. Yes, it’s bad enough for the species to die out on their own, without human interference. I was so angry a few years back when I got to the Wildlife Refuge which they tout as revitalized after they remediated the land which was formerly used for heavy industry purposes and they had placed signs around to be aware of duck hunters along the shoreline. They allow duck hunting in some of the larger Metroparks – that’s just wrong.

      2. Yes I agree it is wrong. Our provincial government allows hunting in our provincial parks. Parts of Presquile Provincial Park, about 30 minutes from us, has areas shut down certain days of the week due to duck hunting and in Algonquin, they hunt moose. That’s probably why we don’t see as many as we used to. I am not against hunting, I’m against the where and sometimes why, you know?

      3. Yes, like you I know hunting has to occur to manage the wildlife population, but I don’t understand why it should be done in a provincial park or wildlife refuge. This contradicts the reason why such parks and nature refuges exist. Gawking or photographing them is one thing; hunting them another.

      4. I agree. I remember one time we were in Algonquin Park camping and when it came close to moose hunting season, we were told to stay on published trails or our campsite because we could run into the hunters hunting the moose. It’s a bit scary.

      5. That would be scary – it’s a shame that hunters are even allowed in this beautiful park. Pointe Mouillee is a big marsh and they close it off to birders on September 1st so people can go duck hunting. It’s just a few miles down the road from Lake Erie Metropark which is a no-hunting park and that’s a couple of miles from the Wildlife Refuge. If ducks were smart, they’d hang out at the Metropark where they can be safe.

  4. It is a small world, isn’t it. It’s fun when those types of coincidences happen. You two visit the coolest places! Interesting info about the sea fowl. Sad to learn of their distinction. Thank you so much for sharing. 🦆

    1. Well it certainly was a cool place in more ways than one lol, Clint wore his touque a lot! It was pretty chilly. It’s sad when we know the reason for any life’s extinction/endangerment is because of people isn’t it? Coming up in a few posts from now, I talk about the Great Auk who is also extinct due to hunting. It makes me sad really.
