Churchill Falls, has a population of approximately 730 people who are probably there as it’s a company town for the Churchill Falls Generating Station. This station is one of the largest underground hydroelectric powerhouses in the world and they provide renewable energy to millions of consumers throughout North America. They have 11 turbines with a generating capacity of 5,428 megawatts. We wanted to do a tour but shockingly, the tours were sold out. I don’t know to whom as we were the only tourists there. They have no campgrounds so you can park your camper outside the Churchill Inn. This was a huge building and held a motel, restaurant, library, school, rink, Canada Post and a grocery store.

Trail to the Falls which we did not do as the mosquitoes and black flies were crazy! I walked down the trail quite a ways and Clint went further but neither of us saw these Falls.
We only stayed one night in Churchill Falls, not much to do here particularly when the bugs are so bad. We haven’t even see bugs this bad in Northern Ontario and we thought it was bad there !

It’s a cute town, very much a northern town with so much beautiful landscape around it. The skeeters and deer fllies as we call them in Michigan always attacked me severely, I detest them! Than ks for sharing the beautiful woods up there, guys!

That’s a shame about not seeing any Caribou – it would have made up for the lack of moose later in the year. I wonder why the bugs were so bad there – I guess all that rain that was plaguing this visit.

The locals told us there are always black flies, from when the snow melts until it starts again. I asked what they do and they said they don’t leave their houses unless they have to. I could not live there.

Oh, I could not live that way either. That would be like people who live in the Southwest and they say it is hot, but dry heat, but they aren’t really outside and run from the car to the house/store/work, etc. My parents rented a cottage in northern Michigan and the black flies were so bad you couldn’t sit out after dusk and we thought that was bad.

I know, we were pretty confused why the tours in the middle of literally nowhere were sold out. It is very barren here. Only about 700 people in this area and in all of Labrador only about 25,000 people.
