Eastern Canada, Here we Come – Channel-Port aux Basques, Newfoundland -2025

So it’s now Tuesday 12 August and the ferry (shown above) will take us to mainland on Friday. The photo doesn’t make it look very big but it is. The ferry ride from Channel-Port aux Basque to North Sydney, Nova Scotia takes 6-8 hours and the ferry can hold around 1,100 passengers and 470 cars or 120 large freight vehicles (lorries/trucks).
We stayed at a really nice park, which we have stayed at before, called Grand Codroy RV Park. We had a couple of days to travel around a bit and so we headed out to the Rose Blanche Lighthouse and Cape Ray Lighthouse. We didn’t actually see Rose Blanche Lighthouse, we parked and went in the store and small museum but you had to pay to walk up a hill, in the rain and down the hill to the Lighthouse and I mean, once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all? We did walk a lot around the Cape Ray Lighthouse though! We drove down to Burnt Islands and a few other spots, killing time until our ferry departure.

We had to be at the ferry by 9:45 p.m. Friday night but we got there about 630 and parked in the lineup as we were bored with waiting to go. We found a good spot with two seats facing a wall and we were able to put our sleeping pads down on the floor to get some sleep. We were up at 6 a.m. and had time to have breakfast before the ferry docked. It was a very good breakfast and was $14 each for a regular bacon/eggs/hashbrowns/toast/coffee. So we were off the ferry at about 730 a.m. and headed to the campground. We are now in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.

More to follow !

  1. Well, this was during the time you had a lot of rain that mentioned in comments last Summer, but there was that one last photo with bright blue skies. You are right – that ferry did not look like it could accommodate that many vehicles/people!
