Eastern Canada, Here we Come – La Baie, Quebec – 2025 – Part 5

Still heading north still, we arrived at La Baie in the Saguenay region of Quebec. We spotted a Fjord Museum with a huge purple sea monster on the front so of course, I had to go in! It was not a big place but they had tons of information and we also watched a cool immersive movie for 20 minutes. It was as though you were in a plane that flew and then went underwater it showed life back to the Ice Age and how it formed etc. There was a small aquarium and another room with reptiles and insects.

Of course there was a brewery close by so we had to check it out. Pavillon Noir was it’s name and they had a great terrace on the roof overlooking the water. It was pretty chilly that day and a bit dark and dreary so we chose to sit inside on the main floor.

After our lunch, we continued on to Chicoutimi and visited the little White House. This was a very unique attraction. Years ago, this area was full of houses but one day the dam overflowed and took all the houses out with the exception of the little White House.

The history of the little White House in a nutshell: it was built around 1890 made with large beams stacked one on top of the other. It was surrounded by residential and commercials buildings with an imposing dam overlooking it. The dam was there to power a hydroelectric plant and hold back the water. In 1947, there was a flood, with all houses suffering damage and at that time, the owners of the little White House decided to anchor the house with solid foundations in the bedrock. Then in 1996, the region received over 200 mm of rain and the water levels rose rapidly. The dams could not hold all the water back and the entire region was flooded with damages over 1 billion dollars. Everything around the little White house was destroyed but it stood, indestructible, as the water poured down the hill all around it. In 2005, it became a museum.

Next stop, we are heading to Tadoussac, a lovely and quaint little town that I would like to go back to one day.

  1. Susan, I liked reading about the history of the little white house and how everything is preserved to look like it used to look, now that it has become a museum. That’s remarkable that it remained standing despite that deluge!
