Eastern Canada, Here we Come – L’Anse-au-Clair, Labrador -2025- Part 8

Middle Bay Basque Whaling Site is another spot we went to visit. The road was narrow, bumpy and we weren’t sure where it was going but it ended up near some abandoned buildings (or maybe not?) There was no one around anyways.

Some of the Natural Resources in the area are seals, caribous and berries. There are some berries and plants indigenous to the area, like Bakeapples. I don’t know why they are called that as they are small berries and not apples, but it’s said they smell like apples. There is a plant called the Labrador Tea Plant and it grows about 4-5 feet tall and is used for tea and medicinal purposes. I tried the tea and did not care for it but I’m not a tea drinker at the best of times, Clint quite liked it and had two cups.

We also went to visit L’Anse Amour and the Pointe Amour Lighthouse built in 1857.

Well that was it for this area, of course I have a lot more photos and information but I think I will end our journey to Labrador here. Now for the ferry to Newfoundland with the ride being a couple of hours so not too long.

Next stop…….St Barbe’s Newfoundland!

  1. Such a beautiful place, wild nature! Those small boats have VHF antennas on them so they must get some use. The museum is nice as are the lighthouses, so many of them. Try to imagine a ride in that sub all the way from Europe, it must have been hell!

    1. I dont think it would have been comfortable in those subs. I could never go in a sub, I’m a little bit claustrophobic and just the idea of being in that sub and something happens, what are you gonna do? I’m a land person lol

  2. There’s those big rocks again in the foreground with the ferry in the background. I think they make it look very scenic. I like those little houses – maybe not abandoned as they don’t look ramshackle and instead make it look more quaint. The lighthouse is big and it shows up nicely against the angry sky. I think the museum would be fun to tour!

  3. Love this part of the journey, so quiet, rugged, and full of character. The lighthouse and coastline look amazing, and those little details about local plants were really interesting. Can’t wait to see what Newfoundland brings next!

    1. Yes a lot of the East Coast of Canada is rugged and wild. I love the shorelines. I often wonder who, why, how someone looked at a plant and said hmmm I think this would make a good tea or jam or something ! We have been to Newfoundland a couple of times and it’s pretty special.

      1. I completely agree! The East Coast really has that raw, untouched beauty. It’s funny to think about how someone just decided to try making tea or jam from a plant, they must have had some serious curiosity or luck! Newfoundland sounds amazing, I’m sure it’s full of hidden gems. Would love to hear more about your favorite spots there!

      1. The comments on the video were that she looked like her right rear leg was injured, but some people just said it would just take a few minutes for her to get going again. Poor thing, went down pretty hard and yes, she was lucky these people came along. She was probably so grateful for them helping her and still a little out of it, so she didn’t think to fight them. I’m glad no vehicles got too close to her.

      1. I did think you were on Twitter at some time … I have stayed since it converted to X since I have a favorite meteorologist there. He retired a year or so ago after 40 years at the same TV station. He is on a lot of climatology panels around the world, testifies in court trials and he posts the weather every day, especially great for severe weather … (even when he is at conferences or on vacation). He asked his followers if he should go to BlueSky or stay at X as he was not going to post on both platforms and more people wanted him to stay on X. I have a BlueSky account but have not been there in eons. It’d be one more thing to keep up on. 🙂

      2. I can see why they might ban it as it is pretty toxic sometimes, but I follow an investigative reporter, Brian Entin, who is on X and he goes onsite to all the big cases and gives a lot of info – he is in Arizona on the Guthrie case, Savannah Guthrie’s abducted mother. I enjoy how he digs into stories to report on them. I follow CNN and weather sites. I tried to turn off “Reels” at YouTube because I watched a few of those videos of the young/old actors/actresses, some of them deceased, wearing wings. Then suddenly I’m bombarded with them – I don’t care for them, so I don’t look at Reels anymore. I had to back off Instagram for a while because I follow a lot of nature sites there and once you follow one, tons more are in your feed until you could kill an hour right there and then. 🙂

      3. Yes I am not fond of how algorithms work. I like a variety but if you look at one thing, you’re right, you do get bombarded. On Instagram I follow a lot of photographers and I don’t like the reels at all. I usually scroll through instagram but lately I haven’t been on Instagram or Facebook too often. I find them kind of repetitive, same stuff over and over. I guess that has to do with the algorithms too🤔

      4. I’ve never seen the movie “Titanic” and I was engrossed in a series of “Titanic” videos on IG of how they did certain scenes as James Cameron was a perfectionist to be authentic as possible. That was great camera work. I thought I’d watch “Titanic” at Amazon Prime, but it’s not available. I like two nature photographers on Instagram. I follow “graysonbellephotography” – he’s a young guy, been following him when he was a teenager, maybe 16, so he’s still pretty young – all nature photography. I follow Jocelyn Anderson on FB, but she is on IG too at “jocelynandersonphotography” and she is a Michigan photographer – great pictures and does her daily bird videos, feeding the birds from the palm of her hand and capturing video with her iPhone. I may have mentioned her to you before.

    1. Yes I think so too. I love the different architectural styles and the histories can be fascinating. Especially some of those lighthouses that are so far away from everything or on an island. It must have been a lonely life.
