Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia – 2026 – Part 1

We were left to our own devices one day in Yogyakarta which was fine by us. We can see a lot when we are on our own. We got a taxi to the Tamansari Water Palace and it was a very pretty spot.  It was built in 1765 for Hamengku Buwono I, the sultan of the kingdom of Yogyakarta. A collection of 59 buildings are on 12,600 acres and include water gardens, pools, and artificial lakes, a mosque, a fort, a meditation space, and a series of underground tunnels connecting the structures. This is the only Indonesian royal city still ruled by a hereditary monarch, the Sultan.

We had to walk about 30 minutes to go the Royal Palace, next stop on our list, and it was hot that day. The reigning Sultan and his family live in this palace. We like the heat but you literally started to sweat as soon as you even thought about leaving the A/C in the hotel ! There were some cool wall murals when we walked through the back alleys to get to the Royal Palace.

Below are some miscellaneous photos in this city. Enjoy !

Until next time! Another Yogyakarta Post..
