Ngorongoro Crater

It took us about 4 hours to get to the Crater, the top of the Crater, but then we had to drive down into it. There is a one way road down and it’s very steep, you have to take another road to get back out of the crater. On the way down, one jeep was stopped almost in the middle of the road as his axle had broke. It was nerve wracking sitting and watching our driver/guide Peter negotiate around it. It was a steep drop off if he missed ! 

We spent a few hours taking photos and seeing the Crater, which was such a spectacular place. We had a picnic lunch by a lake in the crater and there were so many people there! We saw a Black rhino, he was all alone and off in the distance so I did not get a great shot, even with the big lens. Lots of zebras, wildebeests, hippos, birds, wart hogs, lions and more. We actually saw a male and female lion just after they got a kill. We did not see that part, just the eating part. It looks like possibly a Wart Hog or maybe a Wildebeest. They were in the bushes for the most part, eating it. The lioness did come out after a bit.

  2. The lioness “the sister who did not hide out” is striking such a regal pose. I did notice the “well-fed lioness” whose fur looked a little pinkish from the fresh kill yet oddly enough, I didn’t think the lion’s face looked bloody in the least and I’m sure he had the lion’s share (now how often do you get to use that expression for real) of the kill. The zebras either lined up together, mooned you or stared at you. I had the impression that zebras were sleek like a horse … these were a bit pudgy. I’m sorry to read you only have one more post about the trip left. You’ll soon be ready to go to Algonquin Park and your other adventure which I think you said was Portugal if I remember correctly.

    1. Yes they were well fed zebras! I think I’m going to be a bit behind in my posts. We went to Spain/Portugal last fall and this past February we were in Southeast Asia for 5 weeks. I need to get myself caught up! 😃

      1. Oh my goodness – time goes by way too fast Susan. I thought Spain/Portugal was THIS year and I don’t know if I knew about Southeast Asia – wow! You were scheduling your Africa posts for while you were on vacation then or did they start in March when you got back? I was in Spain, but a long time ago, with friends of the family. I’ll probably do a post to mark that 50th anniversary of going there – my pics were taken on a Kodak Pocket Camera. She was born and raised in Spain so there was no language barrier. Her husband was German. We never got to Portugal though and I’ve never been to Southeast Asia, so I will be learning a lot from your posts. I am following an Australian blogger and learning a lot about the flora and fauna there. I can’t imagine looking out my kitchen window and seeing a wallaby or a kangaroo hopping around in the flower bed – he says their big feet and tail wreak havoc in the garden. And he has a few lizards (or iguanas … can’t recall right now) in the house … not as pets. They come in the door. Lots of unique birds like big parrots in his big garden area. You might have to save these two big trips for when camping season is over!

      2. I pre-schedule my posts. I did all my Africa posts before we went away! I like doing that but now I’m behind again lol. That’s what I love about traveling too is seeing the different wildlife. Even when we go to western Canada they have different animals than we do and it’s so cool to see that. I would love to go to Australia. When I was a kid, and even now, I loved kangaroos and koalas. To see them would be wonderful. We would like to go back to Spain, it’s a beautiful country.

      3. I wondered if you prescheduled. Do you take a laptop on vacation with you or just use your phone for comments then? I am not a good Canadian as I’ve only been to Ontario, not out West or even east to Quebec. Yes, Spain was pretty – a lot of old and historical architecture, nice beaches and quaint little villages which we visited to have dinner sometimes since my friend knew the language.

      5. That’s how you keep it – better than toting around a laptop! I would like to see British Columbia, especially Vancouver. My grandfather came from St. Jerome, Quebec originally, but moved to Toronto as a young man.

      1. An all-night safari – that would be something! I talked about you and your photos in dance last night. We start each class with a question, last night’s was “If you could have any exotic animal as a pet what would it be?” I had your incredible photos to refer to. Thank you!

      3. haha I said the lioness and told them about your trip and some of the photos. I love animals but it was a hard to answer because I think the wild should stay wild, but it was fun to hear other responses and learn a little more about the ladies I dance with. Thank you for asking!
