City of Rouen and Memorial de Caen – May 2025

Photo above I took “somewhere” but honestly can’t remember where but I loved the building and the look of it.

We stopped and spent some time in the city of Rouen, a city which was captured by the French in 1204 from the English. Rouen has a population of approximately 479,000 and is situated on the banks of the river Seine. It’s a beautiful city and has another beautiful Cathedral; the Rouen Cathedral which is the tallest in all of France. I put a couple of photos I took of local shops too, I love seeing the fresh vegetables stands!

I have a few photos of the Caen Memorial even though it will make this post a bit longer……. This Memorial commemorates WWI and the Battle for Caen. 35% of the city was destroyed during the battle.

We went for dinner that night and our Tour Guide, John, bought me a drink as it was my birthday. I was trying to keep it on the downlow but I mean I’ll take a free drink ! And for some reason, we have not one photo of me on my birthday. (John is in the blue coat and hat and he was a terrific guide.

Next stop if the Normdany Beaches …..

  1. The Rouen Cathedral is gorgeous – I can see why it is the tallest cathedral in France. I liked the merry-go-round in the middle of the street and the little shops, especially the concept of the outside butcher shop. I know that Europeans like to shop for food at different shops and get their food fresh every morning (if that is still done); it’s a way different way of life than we are used to.

      1. When I visited Germany in 1969 I came home with a string bag – I had it for years. I was fascinated that people would go out evert morning with their string bags and make multiple stops usually just for one meal. Yes, I agree with you Susan – we do not eat healthy in North America.
