I don’t know if people who read my Blog, outside of Canada, have heard of Gander Newfoundland but this town played a huge part during the 9/11.
Gander’s airport date back to 1936 when the International airport was built, 4 paved runways, and it was the largest airport in the world at that time. At the time of 9/11, 38 aircraft and approximately 7,000 people ended up in Gander, a town with a population of 10,000. There has been books written, movies made and a play called Come From Away written on this piece of history.

We also drove to Gambo to see Joey Smallwood’s statue. Joey Smallwood was the Premier of Newfoundland from 1949 – 1972 and he played a leading role in bringing Newfoundland into Confederation in 1949. He was also a journalist, labour organizer, farmer, broadcaster and author.

There was a park beside the statue and they had a train so of course……..someone had to have a ride
We had a nice time in Gander, we sat on a lovely outdoor deck at a local golf course and watched the golfers come up the 18th hole while we had a bite to eat and a drink. Clint and I used to be avid golfers until we retired and now we don’t have time as travel a lot. But I would like to take it up again one day.

The first thing that Gander reminded me of is Gander Radio, follow the link. I’ve heard that station on the shortwave radio frequencies over the years.

I did know about what the wonderful people in the small town of Gander did for the stranded passengers after the 9/11 attacks. (See what I meant about living in a small town from our other comments?) I read the book a few years ago and enjoyed it – the townspeople really made those passengers feel at home. I know there is a play made into a movie. I tried to watch it on Amazon Prime, but you need to sign up with another vendor to view it. You had a nice tour of the airport and surroundings – that plane was very cool as was Trum sitting on the train. 🙂
