South East Asia – Chiang Mai, Thailand – 2024 – Part 6

When we got to Chiang Mai, we were taken to a cute restaurant by the water for our breakfast. It was very nice and we were all very hungry!

After that, we went to the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Temple for a visit. It is apparently the most famous temple in Chiang Mai and there are 300 steps to the top. Yes I did indeed climb them all and not only that, there were quite a few steps to get from the street level to even GET to the 300 steps so I got my workout that day! I was pretty happy that I made it to the top even though I was very slow. I won’t get into details but I have back issues which affects my leg. I am perfectly fine to walk on level ground and I’m okay coming down stairs but going up stairs is a kind of torture for me. Clint thought maybe I should have sat at the bottom and waited but I did not want to do that. Plus there is always Aleve or Tylenol !

Back when they built temple, there were no steps so elephants were made to climb up this steep hill with all the materials to build the buildings. It’s a very interesting and quite beautiful place.

When we left, there was a funicular to travel back down so we thought we would take that instead of walking back down. Besides, I do love funiculars

The first photo on this post is a street dog who was at the temple and there is another photo of another dog, down below. This 2nd dog was sleeping on the stairs and he had a shirt on and I swear that someone painted eyebrows on him! He looked a little off.

Later that day, a few of us had signed up for a Thai cooking class. What a great class and we got to eat all the food we cooked. Well we didn’t eat all of it, there was a lot. The teacher’s husband took us to a market to buy some items for us to cook and then back to their house where she taught us how to cook a variety of different dishes. Such good food and she even gave each of us a cookbook with all her recipes in it as we left.

Later that evening we had a choice of going to a Ladyboy show or a Thai boxing match or stay at the hotel. 2 people ended up going to the Ladyboy show and Clint, myself and 2 of the other men went to the boxing match.

It was a very long, very full day and we had a great time. We stayed in Chiang Mai one more day and did another full day of touristy stuff.

See you next time !

  1. So fun to travel with you two! Thank you for sharing and for continuing to inspire my own travel goals. 300 steps is quite a few! Bravo you! Interesting detail about the use of elephants when first built. That first dog has such a unique look. Wonderful share, as you do! 🙏🏻

      1. I did a bit of the same in Mexico. 👍🏻 A not so fun stray dog story was one aggressively approaching my cousin’s cute little pups outside a shop. Fortunately, my cousin saw the large dog coming, fast. She scooped up one of her dogs and I the other. Scary!

      2. Oh my gosh, thank goodness for that! I am still a bit haunted by what could have happened. My back was to the big dog, but my instincts were to pick up and protect. My cousin instantly went into fierce protector mode. We were able to hop in the car just after. Phew! Thank you.

  2. That dog does have some odd-looking eyebrows. I agree with you Susan. The elaborate decor just amazes me in this post as well. The cooking class looks like fun and that you got to eat what you made and got cookbooks too was a bigger plus. I’m thinking everything looks like it is out in the streets – the markets for shopping and the entertainment. This trip was full of unique experiences for you two.

  3. We spent 2 months in Chiang Mai (well, south of there in a small village). I loved seeing what you got up to! Certainly brought me back in time, so thanks!

  4. What a fabulous day! Kudos for making it up the steps, I can relate to your back and leg issue. We bought a jack fruit one time at our grocery store. I had no idea what to do with it so we just tasted it then threw it out. Lol Did everyone have to take their shoes off where the monk prayed for you? I had to googled those pink eggs, very interesting! I am so jealous of your cooking class and was surprised that she did them in her house, what fun! Now you have to cook from the cook book (is it in English?) and then share your recipes. 😉

    1. Yes the cookbooks were in English and I actually just thought, we haven’t done a recipe since we got back! I have never had jackfruit but it was interesting to see the tree. Did you like the taste?
