Mexico – February/March 2026 – Part 1

One of our local Radio Stations, MIX97 does a Beach Party every year, in conjunction with our local CAA. They have been doing this for about 25-30 years. Clint and I had never gone with them, until last year. In February 2025, we went to Costa Rica but this year we went to Mexico to the Bahia Luxury Akumel on the Mayan Riviera. The group goes for one week but we decided to stay a second week on our own and honestly at the end of that, I wanted to stay longer. I do not like winter and this winter in Ontario has been brutal, very cold, lots of snow, insert more complaining and more whining……. The radio station set up in the lobby every morning (almost every morning) and did a live show. It was a great bunch of people and fun to get to know them. Below photo is the radio DJs and CAA representatives and some others.

The Sunday we were there was the day that Canada played against the US in Men’s hockey in the Olympics. Sadly we lost but it was so close. Everyone piled into the lobby’s entertainment room to watch the game. I just want to mention, there were a LOT of Canadians at this resort!

The beach was not so great due to the amount of Sargassum seaweed. Some days they had dump trucks and bull dozers picking it up and taking it away. I read that it is a significant issue. We like to sit by the pools anyways so it was fine with us although we did take our snorkeling gear which we did not get to use. I got rid of all my scuba gear a long time ago and now I only snorkel.

We had a great time, it was a great resort with lots of pools and restaurants. There were 5 resorts on the property, 2 others were definitely walkable and one was pretty walkable but the golf resort was further away. We went to each resort at least once for a look, a drink and dinner. We spent most of our time at the Infinity pool at our resort and a pool at the Tequila Resort which we really liked and both were Adults only, which we really, really liked !

Some people said the rooms were a little dated but they were very clean, spacious and I really liked our room. I like the dated look, I am not fond of the more modern chrome, glass and white look. Now I’ll just show a lot of photos I took !

You may think an owl photo at the top is odd for being at a resort so here’s my story. One day, Clint and I did an Eco Tour with a guide, Mario. He took us on a walk for about 1 1/2 hours and pointed out, and told us about, different birds/animals. He told us there were Pygmy Owls around and sure enough we spotted two. I found one and Mario found a second one. They are so tiny and cute, but not the smallest owl ! The Elf Owl is the smallest and the Saw Whet owl comes close. We do have Saw Whet owls in Ontario where I live. I actually got to hold one once when we went to a banding event, but I digress………back to Mexico. I have a photo of a Red Vented Woodpecker (also referred to as a Yucatan Woodpecker) (photo below) which I thought was a Red bellied Woodpecker, which we have in Canada. However, though they look similiar, they are different. I had never heard of a Red Vented woodpecker before.
